MY NAME IS JUDY KAGEL,

lighting designer, life-long New Yorker, and current resident of Manhattan’s last real neighborhood, Inwood. I use she/they pronouns.

I have a strong passion for new works and the collaboration that arises from the developmental process. As an artist I’m driven by honest, purposeful storytelling, by palpable emotional implications, and by intentions that are constantly questioned.

Professionally my work has been seen at The WP Theater, The Tank, The Wild Project, Dixon Place, Access Theater, Ailey Citigroup Theater, Teatro: SEA, TADA!, and Arts on Site, among others. See selections from my portfolio here.

I teach EOS Lighting Programming and Lighting Design at a number of schools in the tristate area, from middle school to college level. I love the opportunity to share my love of where arts meet STEM. My favorite part is developing lesson plans that can work for many different types of learners. See my latest teaching endeavors here.

When not working, I love oatmilk lattes, burritos from the local bodega and tending to my ever-growing houseplant collection. My partner and I are traveling to South East Asia this November. Follow our adventures!
